Pictures- Hallelujah!!

Since our Elder is the worst at sending us pictures, I took it upon myself to go find some pictures of him in Etwatwa, South Africa! Can you spot the white kid?
P.S. The big guy he's always with is his companion Elder Eki.

Blurry, but there's our Elder! The whitest kid in the middle!

Peek-a-boo, I see you!

The back of his head is ridiculous. He is literally the only white kid in this picture.

Look at that stud!! We sure do miss him!

So I Feel A Bit Dumb...

I forgot to add the stars of sarcasm when I typed what I wanted last week (I still want that jar, Michael, that's a must have item).

Also, I feel like I should explain the value of Rand, my pay check every month. So as of now, $1=R17. However, it takes about R30 to buy anything worth buying... So there's that.

A day in the life of elder Schnepf:

5:30 am - wake up

6 am - Die at clints workout

7 am - shower

8 am - study like a boss

9 am - study with my companion like bosses

10 am - 12 week training (send help, it's so boring)

11am - suppose to go to the area, but we take a hour for lunch (nothing but spaghetti from my companion)

12am - go be a Elder

8-9 pm - go home

9-10:30 pm - sleep.

Notice how I didn't say breakfast or Dinner? Ain't no time for that. Eat on the Job.

Now, if you really want to send me something that's gonna mean the world to me, send a letter to the Johannesburg Mission office address or the Mission home in Johannesburg. I love emails, but I can only read them once a week.

So there are two foods that have nothing to do with what to send elder Schnepf: Achar and Chakalaka. Now Jim Gaffigan said it best what he described fruit cake: they scraped up all the leftover crap from previous meals and put it together. It taste like my mouth is saying

"nope".

I don't have anything awesome to send home except for a line of my new favourite song:

There's a land we all have come to, Chosen from on high,
to serve with out Lord's guidance leaving ALL behind
Giving light to those who never knew the way
Bringing the gift restored again in latter days

We've been called to build the kingdome in Johannesburg
we will serve the Lord with strength, Love, And Faith
We shall go forth proclaiming with the spirit of truth
Till all people learn the things we know are true

I'll Be Talking For A Bit.

No pictures again this week, sadly. Maybe next week!

So it seems that fate really wants me to say some awesome stuff, but before I get there:

Packages are A ok to send. I've seen elders around me get all of their stuff, so go ahead and try if you'd like... Just ask my mother for the address cuz I have no clue on where to send stuff too.

That being said, I appreciate all of you that ate a burger in my name. I asked you that because It's not that the food sucks, but it's because it's not the same.

Paup is also a really interesting thing. Imaging the inside of a soft pretzel. That's paup: both flavour and texture. It has no nutrition, and It's usually given to me based on the size of my head because I'm so skinny.... So there's that.

Last week I explained how poor it was but I have a really good example. Me and Switz Elder Eki were teaching about the Word of Wisdom (WoW) and We talked about the side effects of smoking and sometimes how people have withdraws and eat alot. The people here can not have that problem because they can't afford food every week... Let that sink in.

So I'm Trying to learn how to speak Zulu (And to Ellyse, Macy, and Brookie, IT IS A CLICKING LANGUAGE). I'm learning how to pronounce all the noises and sounds before I start reading the Book of Mormon in Zulu... I'm gonna pull "The other side of Heaven" and learn it by reading it.

Powerful to hear that all the young men that I've grown up with are all leaving or have their papers in. It seems that I've gotten to the point of the mission where I'm suppose to miss home... Not happening.

Had a powerful stake Conference and the last person to address us was Joseph W. Sitati of the Quorum of the Seventy. He talked about how Powerful the church standards are in not only keeping us physically healthy, but spiritually as well. He also mentioned how another General Authority said "Don't be Stupid" as he mentioned how Mormon's don't drink coke... It was hilarious.

I also learned a new Commandment:

Commandment 11:

"Thou Shalt not be Stupid."

You don't break number 11, you don't get sent home... or break any of the other ones for a matter.

The people here are powerful in testimonies; the spirit is strong in stature here; and the Gospel is going forth despite the one person that tried to bible bash me last week. A powerful testimony on the BoM can't not be argued with. Period. Go ahead and try it, you won't win. BoM Destroys.

Make sure you make time to look at your life and ask yourself if you are lacking anything. Then, religious or not, go pray about it.I promise you you'll find something to improve your happiness.

-Elder Schnepf

PS

Send Hard Candy, Cream of Mushroom Soup, and any form of non-perishable thing if you send anything. Michael, I want a jar of Pickles.

So I'll Explain More About Life Here...

Sorry for the week late post! But now ya'll get two emails this week!!

I made a list and am doing this email first so you can all know about this Mhlongo (white boy).

... so I over exaggerated when I said my clippers exploded. I mean they sparked and I nearly jumped back to America in a single hop, which caused the right side of my head to look like i ninja dodged a katana. It's grown back since then and now I have clippers regulated for the high voltage of this country. I look like a stud once again.

Weeks here go super fast. It's already one month into the field and it feels like I was just on the plane yesterday (never again: that flight sucked). It's super busy work but I love teaching and talking with the people here. I ask about how life and the culture is like, and they ask me how many maids a normal American family has... The assume about America the same way we assume about Africa.

So I'd like to say I miss my mother, but Sister Maebela makes that really hard. Elder Eki introduced me the the south African version of my mother. Imagine my mom but shorter and of African decent. That's Sister Maebela. She feeds us every Sunday, and she's an awesome cook (almost as good as my Mother... almost).

Speaking of Eki, I'm sure you all want to know about him. I'll open up by saying that if Wesley Castro was my companion, he'd be Elder Eki. He cooks (and teaches me), and behaves just like my good friend Wesley... Wesley we gotta get you to meet him. He speaks French as his primary language and absolutely loves mirrors. He's a good trainer, but usually is super quiet in the car.

Oh, and it's a driving mission because we live 25 kilos from Etwatwa. I'll tell you I have never seen poor until I got here. When little kids make toys out of cereal boxes and hangers... there's no words to describe how sad I am. These people are super happy yet they have nothing. NOTHING... it's hard to see how they live life with a sheet of metal that they call their home. It's hard to see how people have dirt floors, and how when a power box breaks it takes 2-4 WEEKS to get their power back. And it's hard to know that this isn't even the worst part of Africa. It's the best...

That being said, service has come naturally. Me and elder Eki did yard work, painting, and math all in the same day. We went and cleaned the yard of Sister Maebela and I can not tell you how many times I quoted my father telling Eki to get back to work, or how I had to teach him how to use certain tools. I'm proud to say I became my father for he taught me how to have a good work ethic.

After te yard work, we had some Kota. A Kota is their form of fast food and there is no one bit of health in it. It's a half loaf of bread that's been hallowed out and filled with cooked paloni (baloney) and chips (fries). It is not healthy, but it fills you up for R10 (which is less than $1).

We then went to go paint a hair salon for soon to be baptize Lizzy Ratchisue. While we were painting, Eki randomly said "How are you?" I said fine and then he said no. I turned around and he was looking at himself in the mirror...

That aside, there also was a really cool experience this week. We are teaching Ronald and Shadraq. Shadraq is really wanting to know more about us and we had to get stern wit him telling him he needs to do his part or we can no longer try and do ours. We gave him a BoM (Book of Mormon) and he promised to come to church with us last Sunday. I couldn't tell you how heart broken I was when we showed up at his front door and no one was there.... A few days later we met with Ronald, his bro whom we also had been teaching. We started talking about the Plan of Salvation and it ended up with him asking to become like his brother. I was startled and asked what he meant. He said that ever since we gave him the BoM, he has done nothing but read it and go to work. He read it day, night, he stopped drinking, and he even wanted to find the answers to Ronald's questions. I have known no joy like in that moment. He had found for himself the truth and he had inspired his brother to do so aswell.

Which brings me to the power of the BoM. If you read it, ponder upon it's words and message, and pray with a sincere heart to know if those things are true, I can promise you you will find an answer of yes. I have seen it in these men's lives, and I have heard of it in the testimonies of the members here.

Also, there's this place called Romans. It's less that $6 of 2 large pizzas and it tastes way better than Cesars back home. Just want to say that.

If I could ask you all that read this to do my a big favour, it's that you go to your favourite burger place, order a hamburger, and just before you eat it say

"This is for elder Schnepf."

then you devour that thing. I miss those things so much.

To close, This is what I have decided for myself. This gospel of Christ turns boys into men. Then God asks those men to go out and become Elders. As Adam Kimble said to me on a powerful night,

"A mission is like a baptism of fire."

He is right.

My clippers exploded...

Super duper short email this week and no pictures. Our Elder is slackin' on reporting back to us!

Before I tell the story, just know that my head is ok, but the right side is shorter than the rest of my head...

So Elder Eki cooks. We shop together so I can learn to cook the poor mans diet and that I don't starve.... score.

I can honestly say I now know what poor is... and it's terrible. I'm out of time this week, so I'll explain next email.

The culture here is amazing and I love the people here with all my heart. Again, out of time.

Weeks are fast, the work is good, and my flat is clean. I'm alive! And I have gained a testimony of the Book of Mormon more so than I ever have in my life. Just know that if you read the intro at the front of the book and do the three things it asks then you can know too what I have now learned.
